| I have some family friends who rushed home from a holiday a few days early after a phone call informed them that their house had burned down. They knew what to expect when they arrived home, so the return flight was a nightmare. It wasn't long before they called the insurance company of course, and started on the claim process. Then the nightmare got worse. It was no fault of the insurance company - my friends had simply underestimated the value of their possessions. By £20,000.
Not only had they lost items which were irreplaceable such as photos and kids drawings, but they lost many items which they couldn't afford to repurchase with their insurance payout. So began the process of making a list of their possessions from memory and prioritising what they needed, what they wanted and what they could afford.
This got me thinking, how many people might be underinsured? Research tells us more than 60% of us... that's frightening!
Add to it that people don't generally record serial numbers or photograph their more expensive items.
